A scholar, a leader, a coach and a friend, Dr. Herman Motz, also known as Coach Motz, worked at
Coach Motz - 1980 Pep Rally with the State Champion Football Team

Thomas Jefferson High School for twenty-five years. He taught Latin and English (and a little biology and ancient history) at TJ from 1968 through 1992. Before that he taught at Cole Junior High for tenyears. Dr. Motz was head football coach from 1976-1989, and was one of the winning-est coaches in the history of the Denver Public Schools. He coached two state championship football teams in1980 (defeating Cherry Creek) and in 1989 (defeating Montbello.) He is the last coach to win a state football championship for a DPS school.
Dr. Motz was larger than life in so many ways and remains a beloved member of the TJ community. Dr. Motz and his wife still live in Southeast Denver. Many alumni, staff and friends of TJ would like to name and dedicate TJ’s Athletic Field to Dr. Motz.
